Enjoy a lively discussion while spending time with other women who’ve also heard the words “you have cancer.” The book for this session is The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. In 1951, cells were taken, without her knowledge, from a poor black woman named Henrietta Lacks. The cells (known as HeLa) became one of the most important tools in medicine, yet Henrietta and her family lived in poverty. Science journalist Rebecca Skloot needed to know more. Join us as we discuss what she learned, and explore some of medicine’s successes and failures.
