The self-serve frozen yogurt fad is likely here to stay, but Maggie Nader said she has put the service back into self-serve, while providing a healthy alternative.
The Pound Ridge entrepreneur always knew she wanted to open a shop. Maggie May’s, in the Golden’s Bridge Shopping Center, opened one year ago selling frozen yogurt and smoothies. It has since added juice drinks and crepes. Most recently they added breakfast crepes, which is scrambled egg with spinach or cheese.
“With a self-serve yogurt shop people come in, they get their yogurt, they walk out,” she said. “We’re more service oriented. We get to know our customers. We talk to them. We make certain recommendations on certain juices depending on how they feel.”
Nader grew up in Yonkers and spent about 20 years in Katonah, where she raised three sons and two daughters with her husband, Patrick. They now live in Pound Ridge, where their youngest, Patrick, goes to Fox Lane High School.
The “juice bar” offers light concoctions that Patrick said some customers use to cleanse. Others order the fruit or protein smoothies, which Maggie Nader said many customers drink in place of a sandwich for lunch. The protein smoothies are made with either whey protein or soy.
“That’s the thing, we have something for everyone,” she said.
In addition to the healthy choices, customers can throw some toppings on frozen yogurt for that self-serve flare.
Maggie Nader said yogurt is half the calories of ice cream, which is why people are so drawn to it.
“It was always my intention that when I opened up Maggie May’s in Goldens Bridge that we would not be the typical yogurt store,” she said.
