Westchester Community College is presenting its Poets and Writers Series with readings in February, March and April 2018. The reading, lecture, and dramatic presentation series lets the best of today’s writers share their secrets with literary aficionados. Presentations in the Gateway Building’s Davis Auditorium and are free and open to the public. Each writer will present their work at two readings.
Ramya Ramana, Thursday, February 1, 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Ramya Ramana is an author, activist, and former New York City Youth Poet Laureate. In 2014 she won the New York Knicks Poetry Slam. She has performed at the Apollo Theatre, NY City Hall, Hammerstein Ballroom, and with at the inauguration of New York City’s Mayor, Bill DeBlasio.
David Amram and Brian Fleming, Thursday, March 1, 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Amram explores music and the Beat Generation with performance and discussion. A composer, musician and writer, he has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Jack Kerouac, Langston Hughes, and others. Fleming is an accomplished percussionist, producer and storyteller. He has recorded on more than thirty albums, and has played internationally with Afro-Irish groups and musicians such as The Chieftains.
George Wallace and Skip Weinstock, Thursday, April 19, 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. Jazz/Beat Poetry performance features Wallace on words and Weinstock on piano. Wallace is a writer-in-residence at the Walt Whitman Birthplace and first Poet Laureate of Suffolk County. He has written 31 poetry chapbooks. Weinstock is a poet and jazz pianist, and has authored Moon Cleaning (2011), a collection of poetry. Currently, both Wallace and Weinstock are adjunct professors of English at Westchester Community College.
